Cœur de pirate

Ten years ago, Béatrice Martin became known to the world as Cœur de pirate. Over the past decade, she has sold over a million albums, in addition to reaching 1.3 million fans on Facebook and 100 000 followers on Twitter and Instagram. On streaming platforms, 3 million fans listen to her albums on repeat. Her most recent hit single, “Oublie-moi (Carry On),” monopolized the number one spot of the BDS charts for nine weeks. Clearly, Coeur de pirate enjoys a strong and enduring presence in the French pop world.

Alone at the piano, Béatrice Martin rose like a tidal wave and swept over Montreal’s stagnating indie rock scene. After gaining attention with her early live performances, she released a self-titled debut in September 2008, which went platinum in Canada and diamond in France. Bypassing the usual touring circuits, she almost immediately made a name for herself on the other side of the Atlantic, a feat many famed Quebec artists took years to achieve. Parting with the piano in favour of a more playful pop sound, Béatrice’s sophomore release, Blonde (2011), was also certified platinum in Canada and in France. In 2012, the album also earned Béatrice the Félix awards for Pop Album of the Year and Female Performer of the Year. Her third album, a bilingual effort titled Roses (2015), reached gold status in Canada and in France, with over 200 000 copies sold worldwide. In 2016, Coeur de pirate earned the Félix award for English-Language Album of the Year and a Juno nomination for the Fan Choice award.

On the Roses tour, Coeur de pirate gave 150 sold out concerts in over 10 countries (Canada, the United States, France, Germany, England, Spain, Italy, etc.), establishing herself as a unifying voice and a safe bet on live stages. Thus, she was sought after by the greatest Canadian and European festivals, including Francofolies de La Rochelle, the Festival d’été de Québec, and Osheaga, to name only a few.

When Coeur de pirate’s journey with Roses came to a close, a sense of creative urgency set in. As a result, En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé took form in only three months, just in time to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the artist’s career. Informed by the opulent French chanson of Dalida, Michel Berger and other major figures from the seventies, Coeur de pirate’s fourth studio opus is the first to have been entirely created in France. The album also features the input of a new collaborator, producer Tristan Salvati. Béatrice claims to have enjoyed a great working relationship with Salvati, who offered a new perspective on her music and took it in a more sophisticated direction.

Cœur de pirate / Cœur de pirate - ROSES

For Roses, Cœur de pirate has partnered with three brilliant producers : Björn Yttling, Rob Ellis and Ash Workman. Béatrice Martin’s meticulously crafted melodies are as resplendent as ever and will enrapture longtime fans once again. The singer fiercely explores coming-of-age themes that are at times painful. The lyrics are the reflection of a young woman bravely facing her fears. The final result is at once catchy and daring, dark and light, exhilarating and moving, romantic and epic. The English and the French songs combine to form Cœur de pirate’s most accomplished album to date.

Cœur de pirate / Cœur de pirate - Child of Light

Cœur de pirate composed the original soundtrack for the videogame Child of Light, created by Ubisoft Montreal.
To fit the mystical atmosphere of the game, Cœur de Pirate composed an intimate and nostalgic soundtrack that becomes magical with each of Aurora’s adventures. With the support of The Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal-based artist was also able to recreate the epic and operatic ambiance of in-game fight sequences.

Cœur de pirate / Cœur de pirate - Trauma

For the upcoming season of Trauma, Béatrice Martin, also known as Cœur de pirate, will be at the center of the show’s musical atmosphere. A new album, which can be pre-ordered now, will hit the stores on January 14, 2014 and a France release will follow on January 27. It will consist of 12 covers, all from anglophone hits.

As she had done with Ariane Moffatt, Pascale Picard, and Martha Wainwright in previous seasons, Fabienne Larouche collaborated with Cœur de pirate to create the musical atmosphere of the show’s fifth season, which will air on Radio-Canada in winter 2014. The resulting soundtrack is a multifaceted selection of covers from both the past (Kenny Rogers, The Rolling Stones, Nancy Sinatra) and the present (Amy Winehouse, The Libertines, Bon Iver), even featuring covers of Quebec hits (Patrick Watson, Les sœurs McGarrigle).

The soundtrack is scheduled to hit the stores on January 14, 2014, the day before the fifth season of Trauma will premiere on Radio-Canada.
