Socalled's new album The Season is the original cast recording of the musical "The Season" composed by Josh "Socalled" Dolgin. The performance which happened one time at POP Montreal in the fall of 2011 was a puppet-heavy indie musical fable for the 21st century, featuring some of Montreal's finest dancers, musicians, singers, actors and artists including Katie Moore, Yves Lambert, the Narcysist, Joe Cobden & Richy Ly, in an original, genre-bustin', one-night-only production. The story is about a close-knit crew of forest animals as they prepare for winter and the oncoming hunting season and are faced with a new threat: an infestation of aliens from another planet. A forbidden love develops between Bear, a bear, and Tina, a feisty, fiery, helpful little red furry thing from beyond the stars. Will their love survive? Listen to the album which features all the original voices along with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra's harpist Jennifer Swartz, the string quartet The Warhol Dervish, drummer Jamie Thompson and bassist Patrice Agbokou. The overture was orchestrated by original JB Fred Wesley and the album was recorded by Grammy award winner Mark Lawson at Arcade Fire's Petite Église studio in Farnham, Quebec. The album artwork was hand painted by Socalled himself, so prepare yourself for a Socalledmusical experience like no other!

MISSING TIME refers to a gap in conscious memory relating to a specific period in time, experienced by people who've had close encounters with UFOs and abduction phenomenons. It is also the name of Pawa Up First's 4th album and the connection could not be more appropriate. After setting up in a summer cottage to record, series of mysterious events and sightings pushed the four members of Pawa to reconsider their material and forced them to rewrite the entire album. The 11 tracks on 'Missing Time' are the result of a profound bonding between all 4 musicians through the realization of an imminent presence of life outside our own world. Therefore, traces of psychedelia, electro, shoegaze and whatnot are all elements that have emerged of those sessions in the woods and added to Pawa's known cinematic atmospheres. Listen to the music and surrender to the idea that we are not alone.

Poetical texts on a dirty and sexy rock’n’roll to resist to the mass formatting.
Two poets (Mathieu Leclerc and Virginia Tangvald) and a guitarist (Jean Leloup) got together and became The Last Assassins. This multidisciplinary artistic collective was accidently born during the summer of 2010 while the trio were creating the soundtrack of the movie Karaoke Dream, written and directed by Jean Leloup. The jam sessions were quickly multiplied, and it became clear: these songs had to live by themselves.

While pushing the envelopes of experimentation and sonic exploration, CLAASS unveils a brand new universe to its listener. The sound of CLAASS has been described as a perfect blend of electronic and post-punk music, while keeping in its dance music sensibility. The songs on its new EP follow each other relentlessly as the energy never lets up. Purveyors of a sound that is sombre, multidimensional and melodic, CLAASS now unleashes its hypnotic beats and undulating intense sounds on the world.
Few artists can add musician, producer, composer, arranger, filmmaker, photographer, visual artist, and magician to their resume, but Socalled clearly doesn’t subscribe to limits; take his international supporting cast of no less than THIRTY-FOUR contributing musicians on this latest release. Ranging from rap pioneer Roxanne Shante, the beautiful voice of Katie Moore, dynamo musician and producer Chilly Gonzales, king of calypso The Mighty Sparrow, 95 year-old pianist Irving Fields, funk trombone god Fred Wesley, just to name a few.
In a ruthless world, Malajube does it it's way, cloud the issue and present a surprisingly happy and driven with an urgency to live. From the Stone Age to the Plastic Age, between prehistoric times and show-biznesss. A carefuly chosen selection of borrrowed pop elements to create a sonic drug. A retrofuturistic musical mixture, pleasantly irreverent and animal-like.

Béatrice Martin (Cœur de pirate) and Jay Malinowski (Bedouin Soundclash) tell stories of love during wartime, bringing together two contrasting but oh so complementary musical universes is this new project called Armistice. One could say the 5 tracks album is reminiscent of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra at their most glorious. The production recalls four generations of soul, a punk mariachi orchestra, a western spaghetti mood, and chord orchestrations that recall jazz and doo wop, all that gathered under the pop umbrella.
Here comes “Baby Ouh!” with its own look: hysterical glamour. The sound: playful, experimental. The lyrics? R’n’r’: romantic and rebellious. Stereo Total recorded a total of 40 songs for this album. So, not to strain your nerves, only 17 will appear on the album. Also included are a few cover versions of Stereo Total’s idols (e.g. Brigitte Fontaine from France and Pedro Almodóvar from Spain). Additionally, many guest musicians contributed, real superstars in the Warholian sense: Gina d’Orio (Cobra Killer), Vice Cooler (Hawnay Troof), Miss le Bomb, Becky Ofek (Boy from Brazil), Can “Khan“ Oral, Anton (Die Dreipunktbande), Albrecht Kühner (Das Barock-Orchester), Irma and Lou Schiller (Der Kinderchor/The Childrens Choir) – their mother gave them permission – and even more star guests.

Drawing from the talents of five different songwriters, the album is a unique and powerful collaboration that incorporates compositional influences from the new avant-garde, tape loops and phasing music, and cinematic sound-tracks with the drive, energy and passion of a rock band. Sevens Project has produced an organic sounding record that defies simple categorization. The warmth of acoustic guitars, lush string ensembles, horn sections, vocal choirs and a Dixieland band are processed with the sonic edge and precision of studio manipulation. Thundering drums, jarring electronics and earsplitting guitars provide the backdrop for gorgeous arrangements and ambient treatments and playful orchestration.

The six-piece Lake of Stew recorded their sophomore effort with legendary award-winning producer Ken Whiteley, who has worked on over 125 productions throughout his career, collaborating with bands who’s musical styles range from folk and swing, to blues, gospel and children’s music (Raffi, Sharon, Lois & Bram.) Somehow, Lake of Stew can actually fit into every one of these categories, having filtered their previous pop, jazz, indie or rock ‘n’ roll references through jug band, vocal, gospel and old time folk music.
Lake of Stew aren’t revivalists, really. They simply use the traditional way of making music to have an immediate connection with the crowd, who are encouraged to learn the lyrics and serve as amplifiers. Go to their shows and be part of it.

"There’s a precise moment during Invisible Violence, the latest album from local lupine electro-lovers We Are Wolves, that signals a surprising and welcome evolution beyond their typically reliable barrage of krautrock and dance punk. At 3:25 into “Walking Commotion,” the album’s third track, an acoustic guitar and string section grace what, up until that point, was a recognizably thumping We Are Wolves tune blending aggressive synths and shouted vocals.
It’s atypical of their previous work, yet feels completely logical given the band’s development following their 2007 sophomore breakthrough, Total Magique. (...) [They] credit co-producer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh with pushing the band to embrace new sonic textures, resulting in a third album with considerable nuance—an important development given the energetic and brutish dance rock the group had been known for previously. Recording under fewer time constraints over two months this summer, as opposed to "Total Magique"’s inconsistent schedule, might have also given them more leeway to refresh their sound on "Invisible Violence".
It’s been 10 years since the trio casually began noodling around with making music as a means of decompressing between their university studies. The group has been adding influences to their stylistic jumble since then, and although "Invisible Violence" retains their original punk spirit, they’ve managed to incorporate more textures, especially arpeggios, this time around." " Labyrinthes is one of the most eagerly waited albums in the history of local francophone rock, and for good reason. It comes exactly three years after Trompe-l'oeil, the disc that proved a Montreal band could sing in French and still attract thousands of admirers around the world, including the U.S. More assured and ambitious than on their breakthrough predecessor, Malajube proves they are way more than merely a francophone wannabe Arcade Fire. They're one of the most inspired groups around today, no matter what language you speak."

"Two years after the great Non-Stop... the dance-punk trio goes delirious on Total magique. Same raw energy on this album than on its previous but we find maturity behind those diabolic rhythms and the singer Alexander Ortiz’ incantations. The production is polish but keeps the soft craziness of the trio. For those who aren’t familiar with the wolf pack, you will be bewitch if you’re fan of The Rapture or Crystal Castles" ICI

The trio continues where they left off on “Non Stop Je te Plie en Deux” and delivers two bangers filled with throbbing rhythms and covered with layers of dirty bass, thick synths and urgent vocals. Buy this EP because Coconut 155 won’t be available on the full-length records due this September.
Étienne d’Août single is full of surprises and has an happy ending! It starts with a new version of Étienne d’Août, one of the most important songs on Trompe-l’oeil but with more piano and vocals. Then comes, nothing less, a "remix banger" of Filles à plumes followed by a new song M. Pupille only available on this single. To end this masterpiece, a Elton John kinda version of Étienne d’Août. This version, renamed Elton d’Août will put love in all mothers’ hearts with the strings arrangement and orchestral harmonies.
Pawa Up First are coming back in force with a follow up to « The Scenario ». « Introducing New Details », the name of that new full length, is the fruit of months of hard labor in order to polish this multi facet gem, a true cinematographic alchemy of indie rock, jazz, hip hop, dub and electro. Various collaborations with Seba (Gatineau, Ghislain Poirier), Dshade (Shades of Culture) and Belle come enhance the cinematic compositions of the quintet.

Petrochemical rock outfit Les Georges Leningrad just laid a bat’s egg. It is called Sangue Puro. Sangue Puro is the third release of the Montreal trio. The sepulchral vibes and juvenile fury emanating from the guitar and keyboards will make you dance for yourself in front of the mirror. The ancient vessels explode and sink under the pressure of the killer rhythms. This latest effort, transported by the chant of a pipistrelle, is a bomb. It appears to me to be the last valuable argument before the Third World War.

The Sainte Catherines briefly put back their cowboy hats on in order to deliver the new Yesterday’s Ring EP. Back From El Rancho is the cd version of the out of print and very limited 12’’ the band released last year. The 4 tracks bring us back into this beer and whiskey drenched introspection that has those die hard touring machines spill their guts. Back From El Rancho is a place of choice on the backseat of Yesterday’s Ring and The Sainte Catherines van.
"Already a serious contender for album of the year, this sophomore effort by Montreal’s Malajube is the best francophone indie-rock release in recent memory. Catchy, heavy, light, playful and exhilarating - it rocks non-stop, and in a multitude of ways. The underlying theme of sickness runs through the disc like death did the Arcade Fire’s Funeral. But it’s filtered through textured, sweeping and frequently beautiful songwriting. Guests include rappers Loco Locass, singer Pierre Lapointe and Dears members Martin Pelland and Valerie Jodoin-Keaton. This is a big record, a great record, by what could very well be your new favourite Montreal band." 4.5/5 (T’Cha Dunlevy, The Gazette)

La descente du coude - L’Indécence du coup (2005) - CD
First full length album by this French singing Montréal power-unit. The songs are in the vein of their debut CDep "Croyez-Moi, Ça Fait Mal!"; political and poetical as always but even catchier and more technical. How’s that possible you’ll ask me? Well I don’t know but it is, witness for yourselves! Rock hasn’t felt this right in a long time!
"Quebec’s heaviest drop the early Neurosis influence they displayed on their second record but retain the panoramic vision, which hits epic proportions here (think early Isis). Expertly recorded by Montreal’s Howard Bilerman (The Arcade Fire), every drum wallop and razor-sharp riff brutalizes, with larynx-shredding vocals hidden comfortably underneath the assault. They squeeze a lot of movements and dynamics into each of these six songs, with riffs left to travel wherever they choose, but always coming home to roost when it matters. The ten-minute opener "Hopes" alone is worth the price of admission here." 8.5/10 (Johnson Cummins)
Pawa Up First started out as a recording project a few years back and has since evolved into a quintet mainly comprised of guitar, bass, piano/synth, drums, percussions with occasional collaborators including a trumpet player and a laptop musician. Influenced by elements of jazz, electro, hip hop, indie rock, and cinematic music, Pawa Up First creates a wide range of atmospheres and dynamics with its instrumental repertoire.

La descente du coude - Croyez-moi, ça fait mal! (2004) - CDEP
Born from the ashes of Montreal icons Suck La Marde and Guerilla, LA DESCENTE DU COUDE is here to make you shake your bootie on the dance floor. On this CDep, the band offers 4 extremely catchy, yet technical, rock gems flirting with indie rock and hardcore. While the songs make you dance all night long, the lyrics (in French) are nothing less than what you could expect coming out of Simon Leduc’s mouth: poetically served political anger!
This CD contains all previously released material by the great Long Island band plus 5 brand new songs, all for the first time available on CD! And to sweetened the deal, it comes in an amazing packaging with lyrics, photos and stories! If you’re unfamiliar with THE INSURGENT, think of a cross-over between Crimpshrine and Dillinger Four, with a unique level of sincerity you’ll feel right from the first chord!

Avec pas d’casque / Avec pas d’casque - Trois chaudières de sang - CD
Avec pas d’casque’s first « real » full length is finally out. « One of Quebec’s outfit to watch » according to Malajube, Avec pas d’casque is a lo-fi guitar and drums duo. Loved for their crafty style. Hated for the same reason. Definitely more stripped down than their first effort, "Trois chaudières de sang" is more representative of the band on stage. A delight for country-folk fans!
